This painting is in the Stanza della Segnatura room, also known as the Room of the Signature, in the Vatican Museum. The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament was the first artwork to be finished in the library of Julius II. Raphael wanted to not only reflect the Pope’s library with themes of philosophy, theology and poetic arts but also to bring harmony between Antiquity and Christianity.
The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament’s traditional name was the Adoration of the Sacrament in which this painting created an image of the church presented on heaven and on earth. The other three important paintings in this room are the famous The School of Athens, The Parnassus, and The Cardinal Virtues.
