He was born Piero di Giovanni but he later changed his name to Lorenzo Monaco when he joined the Camaldolese monastery of Sainta Maria degli Angeli in Florence (he later left the monastery before making a commitment). His early works show a Sienese influence, evidenced in his use of line and delicate rendering of texture. His Adoration of the Magi reflects the international Gothic style, with its elongated figures and rich colors.
